How PayMongo Capital Took a SME From Surviving the Pandemic to Scaling Powerfully

In March 2020, Clara Day Herrera wasn't thinking about building a brand. She was thinking about food.

Grocery shelves were clearing out. Supply chains were breaking down. Clara — trained in commercial pastry-making, certified in nutrition, and an Ayurvedic practitioner — looked at the situation and turned to bread as a solution.

Except this was not just your regular bread–Clara developed a healthier version of the Filipino pandesal, built on holistic wellness principles, designed to feed people well during one of the most disorienting periods in recent memory.

"It was just that simple concept of wanting to feed a lot of people during the pandemic," Clara says.

That simple concept is now Pillow Bread PH, a six-year-old business that has survived the chaos of its founding era, built a loyal customer base, and is now setting its sights on global distribution.

From Pandesal to Digestive Reset

The bread was just the start. As the pandemic stretched on, Clara noticed another gap in the industry. Influencers were flooding social media with advice about fasting, extreme diets, and quick fixes—content that potentially caused misinformation and anxiety to an already stressful situation.

Clara knew enough about nutrition and holistic wellness to know that what most of those people actually needed was simpler, and more fundamental: a healthy gut.

"Not everyone is supposed to do what all these influencers are posting on the internet," she says. "And at that time, health was something we really had to prioritize — you never knew what was going to happen."

So she developed what became Pillow Bread PH's core product: an Ayurveda-based digestive reset cleanse. The premise is grounded in a 5,000-year-old system of medicine that originated in India, built around the idea that digestive health is the cornerstone of overall wellness. Clara describes it plainly: preventive and curative, holistic by design, and effective enough that customers kept coming back.

Clara’s consistency and focus in her mission lead to positive results. Customer retention stayed high, lifetime value stayed strong, and the business lived beyond the pandemic–crossing the threshold from surviving to thriving.

The Long Game

The food and wellness space in the Philippines is crowded. Pastry trends come and go. New "superfoods" have their moment and disappear. Clara built Pillow Bread PH to sit outside of that cycle entirely.

"We're not just about hype or influencers," she says. "In everything that we do, our clients get value for their money. It's not just about selling."

Their social media content is educational, consistently oriented around digestive health — not seasonal trends, not borrowed aesthetics. Clara describes the strategy as "playing the long game," and the numbers reflect it: high customer retention, significant lifetime value, a growing client base that returns not because of a promotion, but because the product works.

Pillow Bread PH also claims a specific market position: pioneer in customized nutrition and Ayurvedic digestive resets in the Philippines. Clara’s determination to inform and provide clean, good quality reflects in her brand’s growth.

Running the Business Today

Pillow Bread PH has never had a physical mall store. It's been e-commerce from day one — online sales channels, Shopify, digital-first by default. In 2020, that was as much necessity as strategy. Now it's a core part of how the business scales.

But that first month was a hurdle. Pandemic restrictions made logistics a challenge. Getting raw materials was hard. Hiring people was harder. Clara kept the business alive through that stretch with what she describes as a willingness to adapt at every step.

"If you're putting out good energy and good intention, you'll be guided every step of the way," she says. Six years later, she still believes it — but she's also built the systems to back it up.

Operations remain the toughest part. Keeping products fresh, safe, and clean while optimizing costs doesn't get easier as you grow — it just changes shape. The answer, Clara says, is continuous flexibility and an ability to adjust whenever the process meets challenges..

How Operations Make A Difference

For the first two to three years of its existence, Pillow Bread PH handled payments manually. A customer would complete a purchase and send a screenshot of their bank transfer via email. Clara's team would verify it by hand, one transaction at a time.

"Before, the client would send a screenshot of their payment through email and we'd have to verify it," Clara recalls. "PayMongo became very convenient for us in terms of handling our finances and keeping track of them."

The integration with Shopify meant payments moved from a manual verification process to an automatic one. Less admin time. Cleaner records. More mental bandwidth for the parts of the business that actually require a human.

Clara has been a PayMongo merchant for two to three years now.

The bigger shift came through PayMongo Capital. When the opportunity to take on additional capital came through, Clara took the opportunity openly.

"We used it to boost our marketing initiatives — more strategic marketing initiatives — to create a stronger presence for the business," she says. "It helped us reach our revenue targets, and it also helped us provide bonuses and benefits for our employees."

Capital deployed toward employee bonuses isn't just a financial decision–it’s a retention decision, a culture decision, a signal to the people running the day-to-day that the business values them.

What Comes Next?

Clara is developing a new line of products — longer shelf life, more scalable, designed for distribution beyond the Philippines in the next 5 years.

"The goal is really to go global," she says. "We plan to produce more products that are making a difference in the lives of our customers — in terms of their digestive health — and that can reach a global market."

It's a deliberate expansion that puts her Long Game ideology to practice. The same principle that drove Pillow Bread PH from its founding — solve a real problem, don't chase the trend — is driving the growth strategy. If the digestive reset works for customers in the Philippines, then it can work for customers in places outside the country as well.

Saying Yes to Scaling

Pillow Bread PH represents something worth paying attention to in the PayMongo merchant base: a founder who built a business around genuine expertise, survived the hardest possible launch conditions, and has grown steadily by earning trust rather than buying attention.

PayMongo Capital gave Clara access to working funds without the friction of traditional lending. The repayment structure — tied to sales — meant she could deploy the funds confidently into marketing and people, knowing that repayment would scale with revenue rather than against it.

The progression from manual payment verification to integrated Shopify checkout to Capital access reflects how PayMongo approaches merchant relationships: start with the tool that solves the immediate problem, expand toward more tools that support growth.

Pillow Bread PH is six years old, profitable, and building for global distribution. The infrastructure that helped get it here — e-commerce rails, a payments layer that just works, access to capital when growth demanded it — is exactly what PayMongo exists to provide.

As Clara puts it for anyone starting out: focus on solving a significant problem. Apply systems that help you adjust. And stay humble enough to keep identifying what needs to change.

The rest, she says, becomes figure-outable.
