Découverte on Financial Systems That Fit Your Revenue Model

Découverte on Financial Systems That Fit Your Revenue Model

Gus Lacson has a simple rule at Découverte: don't offer anything halfbaked.

If the service isn't ready, it doesn't get offered. If a machine brand hasn't been tested internally over time, it doesn't get imported. If a commitment is made, it gets done — and done well. That principle has guided Découverte PH since Gus joined the family business about eight years ago, and it's the reason the company has quietly built one of the more dependable reputations in the Philippine coffee equipment industry.

Découverte (French for "discovery") started in 1999 when Gus’s father received a call from a French contact about distributing espresso machines — right as coffee retailers were beginning to reshape coffee culture locally. That initial brand, UNIC from France, is still used nationwide by Cinnabon today. From there, the portfolio expanded gradually: Iberital from Spain, Gaggia from Italy, grinder brands like Mazer and Cunill, and more recently, Officine Allegra from Italy.

The business model, as Gus describes it, is a coffee solutions company.

Quality is King

Beyond espresso machines and grinders, the company offers coffee beans, barista tools, training, installation, and cafe setup consultation. But the real differentiator is after-sales: preventive maintenance, correct servicing, and the kind of support that keeps a cafe or restaurant operational when equipment inevitably wears.

"If your machine breaks down, your restaurant or cafe goes down," Agustin says. "Restaurants can't afford that downtime. So we focus on preventive maintenance and correct servicing."

For any business where a single piece of equipment is load-bearing, this is the actual value proposition — not the machine itself, but the assurance that it won't become a liability.

Internally, the operating principle is equally direct: communication and coordination above all. Only commit to what you can deliver, and test before you offer. "Before we bring in a brand, we're going to review it, test it, and really look at the technical specs," Gus explains.

No Minimums!

When Gus took over day-to-day operations, one of the first things he wanted to optimize was collections.

Découverte had a bank terminal at the time, but it came with a monthly minimum swipe requirement — a threshold the business couldn't reliably hit, particularly when the revenue mix skewed toward machines rather than smaller repeat purchases. "I don't like having that pressure," Gus says. "If we didn't reach that minimum, then what?"

With PayMongo, he didn’t have to worry about minimum requirements. He had access to multiple payment methods at any transaction amount. Now, he could accept credit cards or QRPh payments without that monthly minimum hanging over his head. The setup works across the full range of Découverte’s products.

"The moment the client shows interest in your product, that's your window," Gus explains. "If your checkout process becomes a hassle, they get second thoughts. You lose the sale."

The Multi-Payment Method

Découverte's customer base splits cleanly along payment behavior lines, and the PayMongo setup covers both.

For individual and personal buyers, someone purchasing a home espresso machine or a set of barista tools, credit card is the default. "Once they say yes, they don't want to think about it," Gus explains. Corporate accounts tend to settle via check or bank transfer, which Découverte handles separately.

QRPH is the choice for the smaller-ticket end items: coffee beans, spare parts, barista accessories, and preventive maintenance fees. These transactions are frequent, lower value, and need to be frictionless. Découverte also uses QRPh for the coffee they sell directly at their office.

"It doesn't matter if it's a big or small amount," Gus says. "What matters is that you can easily collect it."

Reliability at Scale

Gus’s five-year vision for Découverte isn't about aggressive expansion–it's about deepening the reputation the company has already built.

"I hope our impact is that we'll be known as the most reliable supplier," he says. "The brand might sell itself, but if there's no after-sales support, what's the point?"

The goal is to be the easiest company to work with within the F&B equipment space: value for money, service you can count on, and people who actually show up when something goes wrong.

Competent & Accessible

Découverte's use of PayMongo reflects a straightforward operational need: make it easy for buyers to say yes, and easy for the business to collect — regardless of transaction size.

The bank terminal model worked until it didn't. Minimum swipe requirements create pressure that doesn't align with how equipment businesses actually operate, with large sales being infrequent and repeat purchases building over time. PayMongo's model, where each transaction is processed sans-minimum, removed that friction and gave Découverte a single system to handle credit cards, GCash, and QR across its full product range.

PayMongo's financial infrastructure is designed to meet businesses where their cash flow actually is, not where a bank's minimum requirements assume it should be. For a company whose entire identity is built around reliability and seamless service, having a payments layer that just works — without conditions — is the right fit.

Découverte’s commitment to competent and accessible solutions reflects not only in how they serve their customers, but in the tools they use to operate.
